On the 12th August 2008. I was awarded the Seabl South Mens conference best action photograph. This was the first full year that I have done basketball photography for the Seabl season.
Winning the award was a acculmunation of two years of photographing basketball.
I started originally photographing my nephew playing basketball, then Big V and Seabl. Then in the off season photographing NBL.
When it came back to the Seabl season, I the lessons I learnt from the nbl season, gave me a great insight, and advantage on how to photograph. e.g. angles, position to place myself etc.
One of the difference that took me a few weeks to wake up to was that larger stadiums have great lighting, where else smaller regional/local stadiums do not. It became apparent to create a great image, I would have to ramp up my iso settings, or use flash fill into the image. I choose the later, why? This was due to the camera I was using. The 1d mark one, is a good sports camera, but once over iso 800, the amount of grain thats in the image makes it literally worthless to print in a newspaper. Remember a newspaper only prints at 72dpi, on some sort of recycled paper. Also note that this is not bright daylight, but a dark, and dingy sports stadium.
I will continue about howto photograph basketball in another article.
